Royal Berkshire Regiment War Memorial

Description

By way of contrast, the Royal Berkshire Regiment memorial outside the regimental barracks in Reading contains stone flags of the type that Lutyens wanted for the original Cenotaph although there are only two here (the King’s colour and the Regimental Standard) compared with six on the original. A stone bowl on top of the memorial is reminiscent of the smoking cauldron that appeared on one of the early sketches of the original in Whitehall. The carving was undertaken by the sculptor, Eric Broadbent (Derwent Wood having been the sculptor for Whitehall) and a Roll of Honour was placed inside the memorial at the unveiling ceremony on 13 September 1921.
