Stockton House
Stockton
Wiltshire, England
BA12 0SQ
Lutyens’s 1927 work at this house very likely included remodelling the new north‑west hall for Oswald Falk, replacing an 1870s Neo‑Jacobean scheme with a plainer space dominated by a transplanted 16th‑century fireplace with moulded, haunched jambs, Perpendicular‑panel shelf and imported early doors.
Description
The interior is exceptionally rich in plasterwork and fireplaces, although the hall (nw) is an exception. Not the original hall (that was the sw room), this was a lavish Neo-Jacobean creation of 1877–82, all swept away in 1927 for Oswald Falk, the economist, probably by Lutyens, when the big c16 fireplace was brought in. Moulded with haunched jambs, and shelf with Perp panel motifs. Imported c16 doors. (Orbach et al, 2021, p.663)
