Greater London, England

Lutyens’s unbuilt sketch design for the University of London’s Senate House envisaged a Keppel Place front with “steps of honour” rising to a central portico flanked by twin towers, a scheme later superseded when Charles Holden’s very different design was adopted in 1932.

Description

Sketch elevation for the principal approach facing Keppel Place, with steps of honour leading to portico and twin towers. The architect of Senate House was eventually Charles Holden, whose scheme was settled upon in 1932. (Amery et al, 1981, Cat no.477)
