Most First World War graves in Dunkirk Communal Cemetery lie beside the later Dunkirk Memorial around a Cross of Sacrifice with flanking trees and a smaller plot among civilian graves, in a layout unlikely to have involved Lutyens.

Description
The graves from the First World War cover two parts of the Communal Cemetery. The main part lies next to the Dun- kirk Memorial erected after the Second World War, and consists of a number of graves and a Cross of Sacrifice. The other graves from the war are found in a small field amidst the civilian graves. A tree has been placed on either side of the Cross of Sacrifice. It seems improbable that Lutyens had anything to do with the design. (Geurst, 2010, p.279)
