Lower Swell War Memorial
Lower Swell’s village war memorial is a simple Lutyens design of a flaming urn on a square pedestal on the central green, probably commissioned by his client Mark Fenwick of nearby Abbotswood, with a later “S” ingeniously added to the First World War inscription to accommodate the Second World War dead.

Description
This simple memorial of a flaming urn on top of a square pedestal stands on a small green in the middle of this typical Cotswold village (which was also known as Nether Swell). It is likely that it was commissioned by Mark Fenwick, a noted Lutyens client,
for whom the architect designed a garden layout as well as alterations to his house Abbotswood.
The Second World War always presented a challenge when adding inscriptions to earlier memorials and this has been solved in an interesting way at Lower Swell by squeezing in the letter “S” after the inscription commemorating those “gave their lives in the Great War”. (Contributor: Tim Skelton)
