Lutyens’s 1937 preliminary National Theatre scheme with Cecil Masey proposed a 1,040-seat building for an island site opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum on Cromwell Road, but it was abandoned, as was his subsequent 1942 South Bank proposal.

Description

Lutyens worked on this preliminary scheme for a National Theatre with Cecil Masey in 1937. The building was to hold an audience of 1040 and was to go on a vacant island site opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum on Cromwell Road. It was, however, abandoned, as was his following scheme in 1942 for a National Theatre on the South Bank. (Amery et al, 1981, Cat no.479)
