Corbie Communal Cemetery and Extension design
This unbuilt project envisages a cemetery framed by limes and laburnum, thorn‑hedged and brick‑edged, with gravel paths stepping up banks, and an entrance zone where Lutyens’s own Cross of Sacrifice faces a roadside bench and a second seat opposite, between low boundary walls.

Description
The drawing shows two groups of four tall limes each and two pairs of laburnum. The cemetery is bordered by a brick edging and a thorn hedge behind a screen of trained limes. The differences in height are bridged by banks each incorporating several steps. The paths are filled in with gravel. Around the Cross of Sacrifice an entrance zone has been incorporated, with a seat between low walls opposite the entrance. Along the road, a second seat is envisaged; this was actually realized in the eventual design. Upon closer scrutiny, Lutyens’ drawing shows that the Cross of Sacrifice is a design by his own hand.
