The Royal Academy Planning Committee, chaired by Lutyens, sought to build on the 1937 Bressey–Lutyens Highway Survey by proposing an architect‑led ideal replanning of London to address traffic, war damage, and broader material, social, and aesthetic needs.

Description

The Royal Academy Planning Committee, with Lutyens as its Chairman, was formed to propose designs for replanning London, not just because of war damage but in order to relieve growing traffic problems. It took as its basis the Bressey-Lutyens Highway Development Survey, Greater London, 1937, and was intended as a tentative ideal ‘to present a plan for London’s material, social, and aesthetic requirements as conceived by architects; to solve some of the major problems of designs; and to state the case generally for an architectural approach’. (Amery et al, 1981, Cat no.281)
