Shortly after the First World War, Lutyens sketched a series of New Delhi projects beyond the central government buildings, but in the event only two palaces (for the rulers of Baroda and Hyderabad) were built to his designs, while a proposed palace for the Maharajah of Kashmir, echoing Viceroy’s House, remained unexecuted.

Description

Shortly after the First World War, Lutyens turned his attention to a whole range of buildings which New Delhi needed in addition to the central government buildings. These included a cathedral, court of justice, museums and houses for India’s native princes. In the event, almost all of these were designed by others and only two houses, or palaces – for the rulers of Baroda and Hyderabad – were Lutyens’s work. The proposed palace for the Maharajah of Kashmir closely followed Viceroy’s House in style. (Amery et al, 1981, cat no.433)
